Assignment 5

Last week, i saw “Brazil”, a movie directed by Terry Gilliam (Twelve Monkeys) that was released in 1985, and stars Jonathan Pryce. The film also features Robert De Niro and Kim Greist.

Brazil, is a movie influenced by “1984” by George Orwell, and “The process”, by Franz Kafka, and shows the story of Sam Lowry, a goverment employee that lives in a strange city with high technology and a very developed bureaucracy. His life is very lonely and monotonus, and he usually escapes into a fantasy world of romantic and pleasure dreams. He lives in a society of control, in where every person is under the surveillance of the government. When he starts to find out the injustices and abuses committed by the power of the central administration, his life changes and he starts to act like a “subversive”.

This movie has very good rounds and special effects, and it has a spectacular art design that creates a strange city that creates a perfect setting for the development of the story. The music is very good, and it’s an adaptation of the Ary Barroso’s album “Aquarela do Brasil” (1939).

But I didn’t like the end: Sam Lowery is murdered by the goverment, because he had refused to live the life that was imposed to all the inhabitants of that strange world.

Hi, Daniel,
That’s very good! I like your review very much; it’s very well written. You’ve built up some elaborate sentences and your use of vocabulary is outstanding. I suggest you see Orwell 1984, if you haven’t yet, which is also an excellent film. However, I warn you, it’s very depressing and there’s no room even for a little laugh.

His life is very lonely and monotonous. AS A RESULT OF THIS, he usually escapes into a fantasy world of romantic and pleasure dreams. He lives in a society of control, (-) where every person is under the surveillance of the government. When he starts to find out ABOUT the injustices and abuses committed by the power of the central administration, his life changes and he starts to act AS a “subversive”.
This movie has very good rounds (MEANING…?) and special effects, and it has a spectacular art design that creates a strange city that PROVIDES a perfect setting for the development of the story. The music, WHICH IS an adaptation of the Ary Barroso’s album “Aquarela do Brasil” (1939), is very good. (Notice the way the two sentences can be put together)
HOWEVER, I didn’t like the end: Sam Lowery is murdered by the goverment, because he had refused to live the life that was imposed to all the inhabitants of that strange world.
